Contemporary Wiki Issues

In our Contemporary media issues lecture the class has been asked to go into groups with a subject and write a ‘Wiki’ about them, which is just basically researching them and writing your facts and opinions of the given subject. The purpose of this, I think, is to have a database that the whole class can access to learn about interesting things that other classmates have discovered… Indeed that is the purpose but i dont think anyone in the class uses it unless we need to write a new ‘thread’ because most of us hate it and see no potential gain in useful knowledge.

I personally think that it is a good idea but people my age just don’t really do that kind of thing, it’s just not really appealing to our demographic.

The collective intelligence aspect of the wiki was a useful and interesting thing as it would manifest itself relatively fast and simply. All that was needed was a few people with some good ideas to post onto the wiki and you instantly have access to copious amounts of information, as do the other people using it. Some examples of collective intelligence are: Social Networking sites, Youtube, Forums and blogs.
